The perfect place would be under the folder list, a third icon (along with compact and empty).

From the changelog: Added possibility to select all messages in a folder (#1484756)
I can't find the "Mark all messages read" button as requested in this feature request.
The select all messages is nice but to get the requested functionality you must make 3 clicks all over the screen to accomplish this.

We don't need a separate option just for marking messages.

Since the original request is not fixed as it is stated, and from alec's comment I understand that it won't be. So this request should be marked as wontfix to avoid confusion.

I do not agree. The feature is added, but not as a one button.
as a work around this function is available from the contextmenu plugin, simply right click on the folder in the list on the left and press mark all as read.
