Focus switches to preview pane when message selected

Description
There appears to be a focus problem with the preview pane enabled. When I first log in, no message is selected in the message (top) pane and the placeholder graphic is displayed in the preview (bottom) pane (so far so good).
When I select a message in the message pane it is highlighted and the message is displayed. Focus remains in the message pane, I can use the keyboard to navigate up and down the message list and I can use the delete button to delete a message. This is what I'd consider expected behavior.
However, once a second message is selected, either via the keyboard or via mouse, focus switches to the preview pane. Using the arrow keys scrolls the message up and down (when the message is larger than the preview pane). The focus remains in the preview pane for subsequent messages viewed.
If I double-click a message (so that it loads in a separate window) and then navigate back to the message list I can once again use keyboard navigation in the message list pane, but only until the next message loads in the preview pane, then focus changes again.
In my opinion expected behavior should be the behavior exhibited by desktop mail clients: when you click on the anything in the mail list keyboard navigation should work in the mail list section, if you click somewhere inside of the preview pane keyboard navigation should work inside of the preview pane.
